The Brief
Nottingham Trent University holds two archives, ‘The Lace Archives’, cataloguing various physical lace artifacts dating back to 1843 and ‘The Fashion Map’ a module ran from 2000-2018, document Nottingham’s Street fashion trends through the archiving of physical outfits.

The aim of the brief was to create a brand identity to highlight their presence with Nottingham’s School of Art & Design.

Cluny Lace Factory
The Cluny Lace Company, established in 1845 and still family-owned, stands as one of the last remaining manufacturers of traditional Leaver’s lace in the UK. I was lucky enough to visit it, taking the above photos and chat to one of the few Jacquards punch card makers.

Lace Archives
The Lace Archives brand identity is inspired by the foundation of the lace industry within Nottingham from the aptly named Lace Market to Cluny Lace Factory. The Jacquard or Punch Cards were an early inspiration for their simple vector design and purpose of informing the thread of its direction. The Lace Archives itself holds lots of artifacts including sales books, that make use of the striking blue within the brand identity.

NTU Shapeshifters
Nottingham School of Art and Design courses each have their own logo/’shape shifter’ to make sure my identity sits within the foundation of NTU’s brand identity I refreshed these marks to suit the archives identity.

Lace Archive Posters
A poster design that visually intrigues passing people, also informing them of Nottingham’s Lace history. Using photographs taken from both the Lace Archive and Cluny Lace Factory, highlighting the academic and industrial parts of lace history.

Fashion Map
The Fashion Map was a module that ran from 2000-2018 that donated £50 to each student to go and engage with the Nottingham community and document street trends, then create an outfit inspired by aspects of the trends to archive.

Fashion Map Posters
The posters include the actual photoshoots of the students who took part in the module, showcasing the creativity of the archive. The receipts share into where each item was from, mapping the popular shops of the season.

Mural
The Mural makes use of the lace shapeshifters bringing the threads of the School of Art and Design together, highlighting the collaborative nature of both the Lace Industry and NTU.
